PREVIEW
Olympic are chasing a fifth straight FQPL Women’s win when they face Virginia United at Goodwin Park on Saturday night (6:15pm KO).
Olympic have enjoyed a stellar start to their FQPL Women’s campaign, grabbing wins against Logan, Peninsula Power, SWQ Thunder & The Gap following the competition split.
The league leaders, who are three points ahead of nearest rivals Brisbane City at the top of the table have scored 15 goals and conceded none in the process.
Saturday’s opponents, Virginia sit sixth on the league having taken just one point from their four matches following the league split.
Olympic will however be wary of Virginia after being held to a point in a 2-2 draw when the sides last faced in the opening match of the 2021 season.
LAST TIME WE MET
Olympic and Virginia United played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Goodwin Park on the opening night of the 2021 NPL Queensland Women’s season.
Teani Karalouka got Olympic’s return to the State’s top tier off to a flying start with a cracking free-kick in the ninth minute.
Annie Evans equalised for the visitors in the 71st minute, before Nadine Keast reinstated Olympic’s lead with a goal on debut three minutes later.
But it wasn’t to be for Olympic with Natasha Ridley popping up with a back post finish in stoppage time to snatch a share of the spoils for Virginia.
WHAT WAS SAID – Liz Doherty: Midfielder
“It’s an important game, I think every game now for the rest of the season is a must win, every week we just need to get those three points and we’re confident that there’s not going to be any slip ups.
“We’re going into the game confident rather than nervous about slipping up.
“Across the last few games we’ve had a number of players in and out and shuffling to fill positions without showing any weakness, we know whatever team we put out on the weekend is going to be good enough to get the points
“I think actually ended up playing even better when we down to ten at the Gap last weekend, everyone dug deep, there was a bit more of a sense of urgency and determination and it felt like only a matter of time until Allira (Toby) got on the end of something to score.
“That week (Round One against Virginia) was a massive week for us and in hindsight we do attribute those two points to something we shouldn’t have dropped but any team Anthony Costa has coached will come out firing.
“I think they’re capable of winning any game against any team in the league, NPL or FQPL so we’ve definitely got to be on our toes.
“It’s (Goowin Park) our favourite place to play, so after playing on a few average away pitches we’re definitely excited to be back here where we can play the way we want to play.”
